Zapad-2025: From Poland’s Night Skies to Lithuania’s Borders — Russia’s Escalation in Motion

The annual Zapad exercises have always been a stage for spectacle, but Zapad-2025 has broken through its own script. What was once billed as a defensive war game inside Belarusian territory has spilled into NATO’s skies. First came drones over Poland, leaving wreckage in villages and triggering Article 4 consultations. Then, within hours, Lithuania reported unidentified aircraft crossing its border from Belarus. These are not isolated incidents. They are the lived demonstration that the boundaries between exercise and real-world confrontation have all but vanished.

A War Game that Refuses to Stay on the Map

Zapad-2025 is not confined to Belarusian training grounds or scripted battle maps. It is bleeding into Europe’s real skies, and the message could not be clearer: this is no rehearsal, it is an exercise conducted against NATO itself.

The Drone Wave over Poland

On the night of 9–10 September, nineteen drones poured into Polish airspace, some crashing in villages like Wyryki and Czosnówka, others intercepted only after Poland closed airports from Warsaw to Rzeszów. NATO fighters scrambled, Patriot and NASAMS systems illuminated, and Article 4 was invoked. Moscow’s response was dismissive: its media mocked Poland for “overreacting” to what they claimed were decoys, even as pro-Kremlin outlets framed the incident as a deliberate “sobriety test.”

The Violation of Lithuania’s Airspace

By the morning of 10 September, escalation had advanced further. NATO reported two unknown aircraft entering Lithuanian airspace from Belarus around 10:00. Unlike drones, which can still be excused as lost or spoofed, aircraft are unmistakable. This was not an accident but a direct signal at NATO’s most vulnerable axis, the Suwałki corridor. The provocation widened the field of pressure from Poland into the Baltics, escalating the risks for the entire Alliance.

The Logic of Escalation

The sequence is deliberate. First, drones to overwhelm defenses and test reaction times. Then aircraft to challenge sovereignty more directly. Each step clarifies how NATO will—or will not—respond. The pattern echoes Russia’s doctrinal ladder of escalation, where ambiguity narrows with every move and the stakes grow sharper.

Belarus as the Launchpad

Belarus is not a passive bystander but the operational springboard. Minsk’s Defense Ministry attempted to pre-emptively frame the drones as navigational errors caused by electronic warfare, even claiming Poland had been warned. Yet the airspace violation over Lithuania shows coordination at a higher level. The Union State is integrating Belarusian territory into its pressure campaign, normalizing incursions as part of “exercises.”

A Confrontation That Has Already Begun

Zapad-2025 has crossed the line from rehearsal into execution. The night skies over Poland were the first laboratory, Lithuania’s borders the next rung. What follows may involve GNSS jamming, incursions into other Baltic states, or hybrid provocations on the ground. The exercise has already become a confrontation, one staged not in simulation but in the lived reality of NATO’s eastern flank.
